Schwengland Bird B&B

Even for odd birds…..

Grüezi and welcome to the Schwengland Bird B&B at Obermettlen in Root

We are looking forward to welcoming odd birds, jokers and boozers. Also welcome are lovebirds and birds of paradise. Indulge yourself in the Swiss-English accordion birdhouse and enjoy the pure luxury of being immersed in this stunning natural surrounding with its fantastic view!

Why this strange name ‘Schwengland’?

Unfortunately, despite all our best efforts, our first birdhouse was not destined to last forever. Hornets destroyed the wine box connecting wing. Then in 2019 Brexit came to Obermettlen when the English side broke off….but that is another story. The sorry sight of the birdhouse ruins shocked us and in our pitiful state, we lacked the strength to continue to make the strenuous journey to our designated apple tree located so high up above Obermettlen. Marlen and Stephan did not want to plant a new Swiss-English friendship tree in the middle of their cosy ‘Alpstübli’ but luckily they came up with a great alternative.

Our first birdhouse with a wine box

Our first birdhouse was a carefully thought out project designed to express our friendship. It took many meetings to plan and build our birdhouse and these were always very sociable get-togethers; after all, we needed wine boxes for our project. Yes, perhaps the birdhouse came up short but we always had the best of intentions and remained true to the spirit of our friendship tree. After all, all bonds need to put down roots to grow, but also need to be adequately hydrated!

Brexit at Obermettlen

Birdhouse number 2 is a Swiss accordion B&B

Our new friendship tree is now the gnarled pear tree on the left in front of the shed. The only issue was that being given such a prominent spot on the Rontaler Höhenweg put us a little under pressure. Thus started a once-in-a-century project for our second birdhouse. Our initial ideas and design concepts were constantly refined through the planning and implementation stages. We wanted to emphasise the harmony of the birdhouse with the people and the environment. The birdhouse needed to be sustainable, high-quality, a milestone for the bird world, and yet also suit us. Something like that clearly required careful consideration, especially for us laymen. So we had to arrange many more meetings and even more intense sociable get-togethers.

But now, hallelujah, the work is done. The typical Swiss and English accessories represent objects that have a personal connection to our friendship over the years. The signposts are to destinations we have experienced together. We chose the Swiss accordion as a connection to Marlen and Stephan and their love of music. The Schwengland Bird B&B has been welcoming guests since August 2020 and we hope it will continue to do so for many years to come.

Unlimited tea and cheese

My wife and I stayed at Schwengland Bird B&B on our honeymoon. The décor was unusual but interesting and for us, coming all the way from England, we felt very much at home knowing we could have a cup of tea any time we wanted to from the teapot on the roof. The Swiss birds in the room next door introduced us to the Swiss tradition of fondue; delicious melted cheese eaten with bread. We will definitely be having a few fondues back in England and have already been practicing stirring the melted cheese in a figure of eight which, our new Swiss friends have assured us, gives the cheese the perfect consistency.

House rules strict but sensible

My family and I stayed at this establishment for a few nights on the way to Ticino from England and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly welcome we received. Our friends had warned us that the Swiss often have a lot of rules that must be followed but to us, the rules made perfect sense. Who wants a cat stalking about the place when you need a quiet restful night after a long flight (and the hour time difference may not seem a lot but when you have to get up at the crack of dawn to sing, it makes a huge difference, it makes a huge difference, it makes a huge difference not having to sleep with one eye open).

Good facilities

I had a lovely stay recently at this B&B. The location is stunning and the evening hospitality provided by Stefan and Marlen wonderful. The best bit though was the phone box on the roof – it allowed me to stay in touch with my family back home in England – I was able to ‘make someone happy with a phone call’.

A quiet spot to recuperate

A beautiful and peaceful place in which to rest and recuperate after the tragic loss of my lifelong friend and business partner. My only complaint is the difficult access for birds who can’t fly (but wish they could).
